The pickup was in Prior Velho, not at the terminal. The shuttle took eight minutes and the depot was calm, which the airport desks were not.

The transponder for the electronic tolls was already in the car and explained at the desk. We crossed the Vasco da Gama bridge twice without ever stopping at a booth.

Sintra was the one place we listened to the advice. We parked low near the station and took the 434 bus up. The cars that drove up were still circling when we came down.

Took the Marginal along the coast to Cascais instead of the A5. Slower, no toll, and the sea on the left the whole way.

An automatic for the hills of Alfama and Graca was the right call. A tram came round a corner behind us on a slope and I was glad not to be finding a biting point.

Returned to Humberto Delgado two hours before the flight and it was enough. The return lane is signed, the inspection took five minutes, and the deposit was released within the week.

Seven of us in a minivan out to Cabo da Roca. Windy, wonderful, and the car was the only way to do it with two grandparents along.
