What a cookie does on this site
A cookie is a few bytes of text that a website asks your browser to keep, and to send back the next time it calls. There is no program inside it and it cannot do anything on your device; what it gives a site is memory. A comparison site depends on that memory more than most, because the pickup point, dates and filters you set for Lisbon have to survive from the search form to the results and on to the booking window. Without a cookie, every page would start blank.
When lisboncarhire.com writes the cookie itself, it is a first party cookie. When the cookie is written by the booking service embedded in the page, it is a third party cookie. The table below covers both, and the distinction is worth knowing because every modern browser can refuse third party cookies without touching first party ones.
Four categories, and what each one is for
Every cookie this site uses belongs to one of four categories. The lifetime column gives the ceiling for the category; a cookie that has finished its job is discarded sooner.

Session cookies and persistent cookies
Cookies in the necessary group are mostly session cookies, gone as soon as the browser window closes. The remaining three categories use persistent cookies, which stay on the device until the lifetime in the table runs out and then expire by themselves. No cookie here extends its own life quietly; once expired, it is set again only on a fresh visit, and only if the category is still permitted.
Third parties that can set cookies
The vehicle listings and the reservation window come from LocalRent. Its script is not part of the page you first load; it is fetched when you open a booking, and only from then can it write cookies of its own, which is what the attribution row describes. The content delivery networks that serve our stylesheet and scripts receive the request needed to deliver the file and nothing more. Any outside service added in future will be placed in one of the four categories above, and its own policy will govern the cookie it sets.
Refusing cookies in your browser
The switch for cookies is in your browser, and turning it there affects every website, not just this one. In current versions you will find it here:
- Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies, where site data can also be cleared
- Safari: Settings, then Privacy, where blocking all cookies and cross-site tracking sit on one screen
- Firefox: Settings, then Privacy and Security, under Enhanced Tracking Protection
- Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions, where stored cookies can be viewed and deleted
- Any browser: a private or incognito window discards every cookie when it closes
Refusing preferences, analytics or attribution cookies has small consequences: the site forgets your language, we lose the count of which guides are read, and a supplier may be unable to credit a booking to this site. Refusing necessary cookies has larger ones. Your dates will not survive from one page to the next and the booking window will not open, which leaves the site readable but not usable.
Do Not Track
A few browsers still attach a Do Not Track header to every request. The header never acquired an agreed meaning, no European rule obliges a website to act on it, and this site does not change what it stores on the basis of it. The browser controls described above are the dependable way to refuse cookies, and they work regardless of the header. Should a successor signal such as Global Privacy Control be given a defined legal effect in the European Union, the site will respect it and this page will say so.
Changes and questions
When a category is added, a lifetime changes or a provider comes or goes, this page is rewritten and the date beneath the heading moves. How personal data is handled once collected, and the rights you have over it, belong to the privacy notice.
